Covers March 2020. Part of our search timeline: a month-by-month look at the changes that shaped SEO, AI search, paid ads and social media, written in November 2026 for local businesses with the benefit of hindsight.

Quick answer: Once the UK went into lockdown on 23 March 2020, people rushed to search for opening hours, delivery, online services and click and collect. Firms that were quick to update their website and Google Business Profile held on to their customers. Those that didn’t saw them go to competitors who had.

In this search timeline entry, written in November 2026, we look back at March 2020. Few months have shown so clearly how fast customer behaviour can change for local businesses, from salons and garages to plumbers deciding which jobs they could still do safely.

How searches shifted in a matter of days

Demand changed within days. Visits to local places dropped away, while searches for home delivery, online classes, home working tools and essential services climbed steeply. Google added new options to Google Business Profile so businesses could show they were temporarily closed or flag new services.

What it meant for local businesses

For lots of UK firms, Google turned into the main shop window almost overnight. Correct opening hours, clear notes about what had changed and quick updates mattered far more than any ranking trick.

A heating engineer still taking emergency call-outs, for example, needed that to be obvious on their profile. The month also showed how suddenly demand can move, and why it pays to look at search data every week.

Lessons to put into practice

  • Keep your Google Business Profile up to date, including hours, services and any special announcements.
  • Check Google Trends and Search Console every week so you notice changes in demand early.
  • Make it easy for customers to book or buy online, even if most of your work is done face to face.

Frequently asked questions

When should I mark my business as temporarily closed on Google?

Only when you really are shut for a while. Marking yourself temporarily closed lets customers know you’ll be back, and your listing stays in place.

What’s the quickest way to spot a change in demand?

Compare the last few weeks in Search Console and look up your main services or products in Google Trends.
