June 2021: Google begins rolling out the page experience update
Covers June 2021. Part of our search timeline: a month-by-month look at the changes that shaped SEO, AI search, paid ads and social media, written in November 2026 for local businesses with the benefit of hindsight.
Quick answer: From mid-June 2021 Google started to roll out the page experience update, bringing Core Web Vitals plus a set of other page experience measures into mobile rankings. A core update arrived in the same month. The effect on rankings turned out to be modest, but quicker sites gained in conversions as well as in visibility.
With hindsight from November 2026, this update was less dramatic than many expected. Its real value for local service businesses was the push it gave them to fix slow, clunky mobile sites that were costing them enquiries.
What rolled out in June 2021?
The page experience update brought Core Web Vitals together with existing checks like HTTPS and mobile-friendliness. Google phased it in gradually over the summer of 2021. Google also launched the June 2021 core update during the same month, and another core update followed in July.
What it meant for trades websites
UK businesses that had already put work into site speed got a slight ranking boost and, more usefully, a better experience for their visitors. Anyone hoping for a big upheaval found that relevance still mattered more than speed. Even so, a slow page loses customers whatever its ranking.
A plumber’s emergency call-out page is a good example. Someone with water coming through the ceiling is on their phone and in a hurry. If that page takes too long to load, they will simply tap the next result.
What to do about page speed now
- Fix speed problems first on the pages that bring in the most visits and the most enquiries.
- Check Core Web Vitals every month, because a new plugin, chat widget or tracking script can slow things down.
- Do not strip out helpful content or features in pursuit of a perfect score.
Frequently asked questions
Did page experience cause a big ranking shake-up?
For most sites it did not. Google framed it as something that settles a tie between pages that are otherwise similarly relevant.
Does page experience still affect rankings?
Google’s ranking systems do still use Core Web Vitals, although Google has said there is not one single signal called page experience.
