April 2021: Google’s product reviews update meets Apple’s tracking prompt

Covers April 2021. Part of our search timeline: a month-by-month look at the changes that shaped SEO, AI search, paid ads and social media, written in November 2026 for local businesses with the benefit of hindsight.

Quick answer: In April 2021 Google launched its product reviews update, favouring detailed reviews that show real expertise and hands-on testing over thin summaries. In the same month Apple introduced App Tracking Transparency in iOS 14.5, which cut the tracking data available to social advertisers sharply.

This entry is part of our timeline of the search and social changes that have shaped how local businesses win work online, written with hindsight.

What changed in April 2021?

Google said it wanted to reward reviews containing insightful analysis, original research and proof that the writer had actually used the product. Apple’s iOS 14.5 started asking people whether apps could track them, and many people said no.

Why it mattered for local businesses

Affiliate websites and retailers publishing shallow reviews dropped down the results, and properly expert reviews climbed. That matters to any local firm that also sells or recommends products, such as a heating engineer comparing boiler brands or a garage reviewing tyres. Social advertisers also lost some targeting and reporting accuracy, nudging many towards server-side tracking and wider targeting in campaigns.

What to do about it now

  • Show first-hand experience in reviews with your own photos, measurements, pros and cons, and comparisons.
  • Say how you put products to the test, or why you picked them, before recommending them to customers.
  • Install the Meta Conversions API and assess social campaigns on blended, overall results.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a product review good for SEO?

Your own insight, evidence you have genuinely used the product, how it stacks up against other options, and honest pros and cons, from someone who knows the subject.

Does the product reviews update still exist?

Google has since folded it into its broader reviews and helpful content systems, though the same principles still apply.

July 2020: lockdown lifts, online shopping sticks and local search matters more

Person browsing an online shop on a laptop

Covers July 2020. Part of our search timeline: a month-by-month look at the changes that shaped SEO, AI search, paid ads and social media, written in November 2026 for local businesses with the benefit of hindsight.

Quick answer: When UK lockdown restrictions loosened in July 2020, shops, pubs and restaurants opened their doors again, yet plenty of customers carried on buying online. Businesses that paired accurate local search listings with a website that could take orders or bookings picked up demand from both directions.

We wrote this in November 2026 as one entry in our search timeline, which walks back through each month’s turning points for search, AI tools, advertising and social media.

The lessons apply well beyond retail. A salon taking online bookings, a garage selling tyres through its website or a landscaper with a small online shop for garden supplies all faced the same mix of in-person and online customers.

What changed in July 2020

Early in July 2020, large parts of UK retail and hospitality opened again under new safety rules. People searched more for opening times, how to book, outdoor seating and what safety measures were in place.

Meanwhile, online shopping stayed well above the levels seen before the pandemic.

Why online and local demand turned out to be linked

This period made it clear that online and in-person demand go hand in hand. People looked a business up on Google before visiting, made bookings online and weighed up delivery choices.

Firms whose details matched on their Google Business Profile, website and social media earned customers’ trust more quickly. For a salon, that might mean the same opening hours and booking link everywhere. For a garage, it could mean consistent information about how to book an MOT.

What to put in place now

  • Make sure opening hours, booking links and service details match on every platform you use.
  • Add straightforward FAQs to your website covering practical points such as parking, how to book and returns or cancellations.
  • Post updates on your Google Business Profile to announce changes fast.

Frequently asked questions

Can reviews improve where I appear in local results?

Yes. Google looks at how many reviews you have, how good and how recent they are, and how you reply to them, when ranking local results.

Should a local business sell or take bookings online too?

If people search for what you offer, an online option such as click and collect or online booking can win you customers you would otherwise lose.

May 2022: Google’s broad core update moves rankings across the board

Person browsing an online shop on a laptop
Photo: Campaign Creators on Unsplash

Covers May 2022. Part of our search timeline: a month-by-month look at the changes that shaped SEO, AI search, paid ads and social media, written in November 2026 for local businesses with the benefit of hindsight.

Quick answer: On 25 May 2022 Google launched its May 2022 core update, a wide-ranging change that shifted rankings in lots of different sectors. There was no single thing to fix, as is always the case with core updates. Sites offering stronger, genuinely helpful content and obvious expertise generally came out ahead.

We are writing this in November 2026, and the May 2022 update still stands out as one of the bigger shake-ups of that year. It is also a good example of why staying calm pays off when a core update hits.

What did the May 2022 update involve?

The rollout took around two weeks to complete. Google’s advice stayed the same as for previous updates: concentrate on content quality, expertise and whether visitors leave satisfied, rather than on technical tinkering.

How did it affect local businesses?

A number of UK businesses saw traffic rise or fall sharply. The ones that reacted in a hurry, rewriting or deleting pages before the dust had settled, often found things harder. Those that worked through their content quality steadily tended to recover, or even gain ground, in later updates.

Picture a landscaper covering three towns who loses a few positions for “garden design” the week the update starts. Rewriting every service page that afternoon would be guesswork. Waiting for the rollout to finish, then comparing their pages with the ones now ranking above them, gives a much clearer picture.

How to handle a core update today

  • Hold off on any analysis until Google confirms the rollout is complete.
  • Set the pages that dropped alongside the ones that rose, and compare depth, accuracy and the expertise on show.
  • Strengthen or merge thin pages instead of removing large chunks of content in one go.

Frequently asked questions

Why have I lost rankings after a core update?

Google reassessed a huge number of pages, and some competitors may now be judged more relevant or more useful. A drop like this is not a penalty.

How often does Google run core updates?

Usually a few times each year. Google keeps a public list of them, so you can check dates.

November 2024: a core update with good news for smaller sites

Team reviewing a printed report around a table
Photo: Sebastian Herrmann on Unsplash

Covers November 2024. Part of our search timeline: a month-by-month look at the changes that shaped SEO, AI search, paid ads and social media, written in November 2026 for local businesses with the benefit of hindsight.

Quick answer: On 11 November 2024 Google began rolling out its latest core update, carrying on its effort to surface useful content from a wider spread of websites, smaller independent ones among them. A number of sites that had been hit earlier that year recovered some ground, though many didn’t.

Most trades and local service firms are small sites up against directories, comparison platforms and national brands. So any sign that Google wanted to give smaller, knowledgeable businesses a fairer hearing was worth paying attention to.

What happened during November 2024?

The rollout took roughly three weeks. Independent publishers had given Google feedback, which it acknowledged, and it said it was trying to do a better job of putting smaller sites’ helpful content in front of searchers.

Why was this relevant for UK businesses?

UK small businesses with real expertise had grounds for careful optimism. The ones that recovered were generally those that had carried on improving their content, rather than sitting tight and waiting for the algorithm to change back.

What to focus on now

  • Keep improving your pages in between updates instead of waiting for a recovery.
  • Make it obvious what sets you apart: your knowledge of the area, your experience and the work you’ve actually done.
  • Watch your branded searches, as growth there often reflects a growing reputation.

Frequently asked questions

Are core updates biased towards big brands?

Big brands carry strong signals. Even so, Google’s stated aim is to reward helpful content whatever the size of the site.

Can a small local business still compete in search?

Yes, particularly on specific, local or specialist topics where real expertise is easy to see.

November 2021: Google ships a core update, then a local search update

Team reviewing a printed report around a table
Photo: Sebastian Herrmann on Unsplash

Covers November 2021. Part of our search timeline: a month-by-month look at the changes that shaped SEO, AI search, paid ads and social media, written in November 2026 for local businesses with the benefit of hindsight.

Quick answer: Google released a broad core update in November 2021, followed by a local search update that reshuffled how local results were weighted. Map pack positions moved for some businesses, showing once again that local search weighs up relevance, distance and prominence together.

If most of your work comes from people searching “plumber near me” or “garage in [town]”, the map pack is where it’s won or lost. That makes a local search update one of the changes that can hit a trades business hardest.

What happened in November 2021?

Rollout of the November 2021 core update began mid-month. After that, Google confirmed a separate local search update, which ran from the end of November into December and altered how much weight each local ranking factor carried.

Why did it matter for local businesses in the UK?

UK local businesses, from trades to clinics, depend heavily on map results. A drop in local rankings meant fewer calls and enquiries, and businesses with patchy or mismatched listings were the most exposed.

How to strengthen your local rankings now

  • Fill in every section of your Google Business Profile that applies, including categories and services.
  • Ask satisfied customers for reviews as a matter of routine, and reply to each one.
  • Keep your business name, address and phone number exactly the same on your website and in every directory.

Frequently asked questions

Which factors matter most for local rankings?

Google points to relevance, distance and prominence. Prominence covers things like reviews, links and your general reputation.

Will adding keywords to my business name help?

Stuffing keywords into your business name when they aren’t really in it breaks Google’s rules and risks having your listing suspended.

August 2026: getting Q4 plans ready across search, AI and social

Person browsing an online shop on a laptop
Photo: Campaign Creators on Unsplash

Covers August 2026. Part of our search timeline: a month-by-month look at the changes that shaped SEO, AI search, paid ads and social media, written in November 2026 for local businesses with the benefit of hindsight.

Quick answer: August 2026 was the moment to get Q4 planned. In the UK, AI Overviews and AI Mode had bedded in, Google was rolling out an opt-out from AI Overviews and advertising inside ChatGPT was expanding. A solid plan for the quarter took in refreshed content, product data, Google Ads, creative for paid social and email, with everything ready well ahead of November.

For many trades, the last quarter is the busiest of the year. Heating engineers field breakdown calls as the weather turns, roofers and gutter cleaners deal with autumn storms, and salons and garages sell gift vouchers in the run-up to Christmas. Planning in late summer means you are ready when the phone starts ringing.

What changed in August 2026?

Google pressed on with its AI search rollout, while advertisers found themselves with a wider choice of automated, AI-driven campaign types than at any point before. Competition in the peak season was expected to be fierce.

Why did it matter for UK businesses?

UK businesses that planned early gave their automated campaigns time to learn, refreshed key pages before the busiest searches arrived and had fresh creative ready so their ads did not go stale.

What to do about it now

  • Update your busy-season landing pages, such as boiler servicing, emergency repairs or gift vouchers, by early October.
  • If you sell online, check product feeds and stock information before Black Friday.
  • Plan your paid social creative in advance so new images or videos go live every few weeks.

Frequently asked questions

When should I start planning for Q4?

Late summer is ideal. That leaves time to have pages, campaigns and creative finished before November arrives.

Should I make website changes before my busy season?

Make improvements early, and steer clear of big changes such as site migrations during your peak weeks.

March 2024: a major core update, three new spam policies and INP

Consultant explaining ideas during a meeting with a laptop
Photo: Headway on Unsplash

Covers March 2024. Part of our search timeline: a month-by-month look at the changes that shaped SEO, AI search, paid ads and social media, written in November 2026 for local businesses with the benefit of hindsight.

Quick answer: In March 2024 Google launched one of its largest core updates, merged the helpful content system into its core ranking systems and brought in three new spam policies. These covered expired domain abuse, scaled content abuse and site reputation abuse. In the same month, First Input Delay was retired as a Core Web Vital and replaced by Interaction to Next Paint.

For local service businesses, this was a month that rewarded the real thing. A heating engineer with genuine know-how stood to gain, while sites that had churned out hundreds of near-identical “plumber in [town]” pages had good reason to worry.

What changed in March 2024?

According to Google, the aim was to reduce unhelpful content in search results by roughly 40%. The fresh spam rules went after content mass-produced to rank, third-party content taking advantage of a host site’s reputation, and expired domains bought and reused. INP officially became the responsiveness metric on 12 March.

Why did it matter to UK businesses?

Sites that relied on sheer volume of content, AI-written or otherwise, saw heavy losses. UK businesses with real expertise had an opening to move up. How quickly pages responded on mobile also came into sharper focus.

What to do about it now

  • Review any content made in bulk, such as town-by-town location pages, for originality, accuracy and genuine usefulness.
  • Look at INP in Search Console and fix sluggish interactions caused by heavy scripts.
  • Do not let outside parties publish content on your site just to ride on its reputation.

Frequently asked questions

What counts as scaled content abuse?

Publishing large volumes of unoriginal content mainly to manipulate rankings, whatever method is used to create it.

What does Interaction to Next Paint measure?

It is a Core Web Vital that tracks how fast a page reacts to clicks, taps and key presses across the whole visit.

September 2022: Google’s core update and product reviews update overlap

Independent shop front with products displayed in the window
Photo: Mick Haupt on Unsplash

Covers September 2022. Part of our search timeline: a month-by-month look at the changes that shaped SEO, AI search, paid ads and social media, written in November 2026 for local businesses with the benefit of hindsight.

Quick answer: Google launched two updates within days of each other in September 2022: a wide-ranging core update, plus an update aimed at product reviews. With two updates overlapping, it was hard to pin down the cause of any change, so the sensible response was to lift overall quality and improve review content rather than chase a single factor.

This timeline entry, written in November 2026, covers September 2022. Many local businesses publish comparison or “best of” content, such as a heating engineer reviewing boiler brands or a garage comparing tyres, so the product reviews side of this month is more relevant than it might first appear.

The updates of September 2022

Google’s September 2022 core update ran at the same time as a product reviews update, and both had finished within a few weeks. Google’s guidance on quality and reviews stayed the same as usual.

Why overlapping updates caused confusion

UK sites with review content, including online shops and publishers, felt the effects of both updates at once. It showed how useful it is to track changes page by page and to group pages by type, so you can see what actually moved.

How to analyse and improve

  • Sort your pages into types, for example service pages, area pages, reviews and guides, before looking at ranking changes.
  • Add a note in your analytics on each update date, so the before and after periods are easy to compare.
  • Make review content stronger with hands-on experience, fair comparisons and a clear recommendation, such as which boilers you fit most often and why.

Frequently asked questions

How do I work out which update hit my site?

Check the timing, which types of page moved and which competitors rose or fell. When updates overlap, you often cannot separate them completely.

Does a product reviews update affect local businesses?

Mostly it touches pages that recommend or review products, such as buying guides written by businesses that sell or fit those products.

December 2025: planning 2026 marketing across search, AI and social

Consultant explaining ideas during a meeting with a laptop
Photo: Headway on Unsplash

Covers December 2025. Part of our search timeline: a month-by-month look at the changes that shaped SEO, AI search, paid ads and social media, written in November 2026 for local businesses with the benefit of hindsight.

Quick answer: By December 2025 search looked very different: ChatGPT search, social search and Google’s own AI Overviews and AI Mode were all competing for people’s attention. Planning for 2026 meant setting targets for appearing in AI answers, not only for rankings, and bringing SEO, paid ads and social together around the questions customers actually ask.

This timeline entry, written in November 2026, looks at December 2025. For many trades businesses the quieter weeks around Christmas are when next year’s marketing gets planned, so it is a good point to step back and see how the landscape had changed.

Where things stood in December 2025

During 2025, AI search went from something people experimented with to an everyday habit for UK searchers. Social platforms grew further as places people search, and advertising platforms relied more heavily on automation.

Why joined-up planning mattered

UK businesses that still planned each channel on its own risked wasting time and money. One shared plan, based on customer questions, accurate business information and results you can measure, gave each channel a clearer role.

Building your plan

  • Write a list of the questions customers ask you, such as “how much does a rewire cost?”, and use it to plan content for search, AI and social.
  • Set targets that cover AI visibility, searches for your business name and leads, not only clicks.
  • Before January, make sure your consent banner and conversion tracking are working properly.

Frequently asked questions

What belongs in a 2026 marketing plan?

Search, AI visibility, paid ads, social, content and measurement, all tied to the same journey a customer takes from first question to booking.

Should local businesses still invest in SEO in 2026?

Yes. Good SEO is what gets you seen on Google, and AI tools tend to draw their answers from well-optimised pages too.

April 2026: a spring tune-up for your local search presence

Team reviewing a printed report around a table
Photo: Sebastian Herrmann on Unsplash

Covers April 2026. Part of our search timeline: a month-by-month look at the changes that shaped SEO, AI search, paid ads and social media, written in November 2026 for local businesses with the benefit of hindsight.

Quick answer: By April 2026, local search reached well beyond Google Maps. ChatGPT and other assistants, along with AI Overviews and AI Mode, were also suggesting local firms, using Google Business Profiles, reviews and how consistent a business’s details were across the web. A quick spring check keeps all of that accurate.

This timeline entry, written in November 2026, looks at April 2026. Spring is a natural moment for a tidy-up: landscapers, roofers and window cleaners are heading into their busy months, and heating engineers are planning servicing rounds.

How local search looked in April 2026

More and more local questions, such as who the best nearby electrician is or which dentist has the top ratings, were being answered by AI-powered search. Those answers drew on business profiles, reviews and the information on company websites.

Why it mattered for local firms

For a UK local business, out of date profiles or mismatched details were now affecting map rankings and AI recommendations alike. Small corrections could lead to a visible difference in phone calls and bookings.

Your spring checklist

  • Bring your Google Business Profile up to date: opening hours, services, photos and categories.
  • Respond to your latest reviews and ask satisfied customers to leave new ones.
  • Make sure your business name, address and phone number are identical on your website and the main directories.

Frequently asked questions

Is Google Business Profile information used by AI tools?

Google’s own AI features use Business Profile data. Other assistants rely on sources around the web, which is why consistent details everywhere are important.

How many reviews should I aim for?

There is no magic number. A regular stream of fresh, genuine reviews counts for more than a big total that has gone quiet.
