Covers September 2024. Part of our search timeline: a month-by-month look at the changes that shaped SEO, AI search, paid ads and social media, written in November 2026 for local businesses with the benefit of hindsight.

Quick answer: By September 2024, around a month after AI Overviews went live in the UK, some clear patterns had appeared. The pages Google quoted in its AI summaries usually answered the question straight away, were well organised and came from trusted sources. Pages that hid the answer or waffled were seldom used.

For a local trade business, this is good news. You do not need a huge blog to be quoted. You need pages that answer customers’ questions plainly.

What people noticed in September 2024

SEO teams around the UK looked closely at which pages AI Overviews were citing for the searches they cared about. The cited pages often shared the same traits: short, clear definitions, lists and tables, current information and a strong track record on the topic.

Why this matters for trades and local firms

It handed businesses a practical playbook. The way a page is written and laid out matters, not only the subject it covers. A heating engineer’s page on “how long does a boiler service take” that answers in the opening line stands a better chance than one that starts with three paragraphs about the company’s history. The same habits work for Gemini, ChatGPT and similar AI tools too.

How to apply these lessons today

  • Open each important section with an answer of one or two sentences, then add the detail underneath.
  • Use lists and tables for prices, steps, comparisons and specifications.
  • Show when a page was last updated and keep prices, regulations and other facts current.

Frequently asked questions

Are long articles more likely to be quoted in AI Overviews?

Not necessarily. A clear, specific answer counts for more than word count.

Will structured data get my page into AI Overviews?

It helps Google understand your content, but it is not a requirement for appearing in AI features.
