August 2022: Google rolls out the helpful content update
Covers August 2022. Part of our search timeline: a month-by-month look at the changes that shaped SEO, AI search, paid ads and social media, written in November 2026 for local businesses with the benefit of hindsight.
Quick answer: Google released the helpful content update in August 2022. It was a site-wide signal targeting content made mostly to rank instead of to help readers. A site carrying a lot of unhelpful pages could see the whole domain held back, so the focus of content strategy moved firmly from quantity to quality.
For many local businesses, this was the end of the “post a blog every week about anything” approach. Thin articles written only to catch a keyword started to look like a liability rather than an asset.
What did Google introduce in August 2022?
Google brought in a new ranking signal designed to spot content with little value, little added value, or content written mainly for search engines. It worked across the whole site rather than page by page, and it began with searches in English.
Why did it matter to UK businesses?
UK firms that had pumped out piles of generic posts purely to target keywords were exposed. The update favoured content from people with genuine experience, answering real questions for a clearly defined audience. A heating engineer explaining a fault they fix every week fits that far better than a vague article on “10 home tips”.
How to put this into practice today
- Write with one type of customer in mind and answer their questions in full.
- Show real hands-on experience and know-how, with a named author.
- Go back through older posts and improve, combine or remove anything that adds little.
Frequently asked questions
Does the helpful content update still exist on its own?
No. In March 2024 Google made the helpful content system part of its main core ranking setup.
How can I tell whether my content is helpful?
Ask yourself whether a reader would come away satisfied, and whether the page shows real expertise and something original.
