Covers February 2022. Part of our search timeline: a month-by-month look at the changes that shaped SEO, AI search, paid ads and social media, written in November 2026 for local businesses with the benefit of hindsight.

Quick answer: In February 2022 Google started rolling out the page experience update to desktop results, so Core Web Vitals and HTTPS signals no longer applied to mobile alone. Desktop pages now needed the same care over speed and layout stability as their mobile versions.

Most homeowners find a tradesperson on their phone, but not all of your customers do. Facilities managers, letting agents and main contractors often book electricians, cleaners or roofers from an office computer, so the desktop version of your site still has to perform.

What changed in February 2022?

Google began using page experience signals in desktop rankings, leaving out mobile-friendliness. The rollout finished in March 2022, and Search Console added a desktop section to its page experience reports.

Why did it matter for UK businesses?

Firms whose customers mostly browse at work on a desktop had good reason to look closely at desktop performance. Bulky scripts and oversized images that felt fine on a fast office connection still dragged down Core Web Vitals.

What to do about it now

  • Review Core Web Vitals for desktop and mobile separately in Search Console.
  • Look hard at third-party add-ons that slow pages down, for example review badges, trackers and chat widgets.
  • Reserve space for images and embeds so the layout does not jump about while loading.

Frequently asked questions

Does desktop speed still matter with mobile-first indexing?

Yes. Google indexes your mobile pages, yet how your site performs on desktop still plays a part in desktop rankings.

What counts as a good Core Web Vitals score?

LCP below 2.5 seconds, INP below 200 milliseconds and CLS below 0.1, measured across most visits.
