Covers January 2025. Part of our search timeline: a month-by-month look at the changes that shaped SEO, AI search, paid ads and social media, written in November 2026 for local businesses with the benefit of hindsight.

Quick answer: In January 2025 TikTok stopped working for a short time for users in the US, as a legal deadline about who owns the app arrived, and then service came back. People in the UK were not directly affected. Even so, it was a clear warning that any platform can change overnight, so businesses need channels they own and a presence across more than one platform.

Writing in November 2026, we still point clients back to this episode. Plenty of local businesses, from salons to garden services, get a good share of new customers from one social app, and that is a risk worth planning for.

What happened to TikTok in January 2025?

Under a US law, TikTok’s owner had to sell its American operations or face a ban. Around the deadline of 19 January the app went dark for US users for a brief period, before returning while the situation carried on developing.

The lesson for UK local businesses

UK brands getting most of their reach from TikTok saw just how fragile marketing can be when it depends on one platform. Growing an email list, building search visibility and showing up on several platforms all reduce that exposure.

Imagine a hair salon that books most of its new clients through TikTok videos. If the app vanished for a week, would those people still be able to find the salon on Google, or get an email about next month’s offers? If not, that is the gap to close.

How to spread your risk today

  • Use your social posts to collect email addresses or phone numbers you control.
  • Reuse your strongest TikTok videos as Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts.
  • Keep your website and Google Business Profile in good shape so people can find you directly.
