July 2025: Google AI Mode arrives in the UK as Instagram posts become searchable
Covers July 2025. Part of our search timeline: a month-by-month look at the changes that shaped SEO, AI search, paid ads and social media, written in November 2026 for local businesses with the benefit of hindsight.
Quick answer: July 2025 saw Google switch on AI Mode for users in the UK, while from 10 July Instagram allowed search engines to index what professional accounts post publicly. For local trades, that meant a fresh AI search experience to show up in, plus a new route for Instagram content to appear in Google results.
This entry in our search timeline looks back at July 2025 from November 2026. Two changes landed in the same month, one on Google and one on Instagram, and both pulled search and social a little closer together for small UK businesses.
The two changes that landed in July 2025
First, AI Mode opened up to people in the UK searching in English. It gives longer, conversational answers built from several sources, rather than a simple list of links.
Second, Instagram opened up public reels and photos posted by creator and business accounts so they could be listed in Bing and Google results. Account holders could switch this off in their settings if they preferred not to be found that way.
What it meant for trades and local services
The line between social media and search got thinner. A kitchen fitter posting finished jobs on Instagram could now be found on Google through those posts, so captions, alt text and the words people actually search for began to count. At the same time, AI Mode set a higher standard for websites: pages needed clear, quotable answers about services, areas covered and prices to stand a chance of being referenced.
What to do now
- Write Instagram captions that describe the job in plain search terms, for example “new combi boiler fitted in Broughty Ferry”.
- Fill in alt text on your Instagram posts and reels.
- Check your main service pages give straightforward answers that AI Mode could quote.
